    Kei te aha, Kura reo

Kei te aha, Kura Reo continued its vital role in reo revitalisation within Te Tai Rāwhiti through language planning initiatives that encouraged hapū to embed te reo Māori within marae and communities.

Held at Uepōhatu and Ngata Memorial College, the four-day kura reo attracted 135 participants, including kaiako, pakeke, ngā uri o Porourangi, and wider community members.

The programme focused on revitalising the Ngāti Porou dialect, strengthening tikanga, and fostering intergenerational learning to ensure inclusivity for speakers of all proficiency levels.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of participants reporting greater confidence and new practical tools to integrate te reo Māori into their daily lives.

Beyond individual growth, this kaupapa strengthened networks and partnerships, creating a strong platform for future projects that support the sustainability of both language and culture.

    Irirau o Waikōkopu

Irirau o Waikōkopu brought together five generations of whānau from Māhia — along with those now living beyond the rohe — for a series of five wānanga held throughout the year. Its purpose was to reclaim and strengthen the reo Māori of the whānau, with success measured in the confidence to stand, speak, and uphold traditions.

Taught primarily through the Te Ataarangi method, and supported by waiata, karakia and pūrākau, the programme offered a consistent learning structure that nurtured growth and encouraged participants to take ownership of their reo journey.
Through this kaupapa, the whānau renewed their collective commitment to te reo Māori.

Tamariki actively pursuing their reo journeys are now supported by their wider whānau, strengthening their connection to Māoritanga and reinforcing their ties to marae. While challenges remain, this initiative symbolises a shared determination to learn, lead, and live by te reo together.
