Seeking investment support for your reo revitalisation project? Ensure your project aligns to your Kāhui Investment Plan.

The three main goals of the Kāhui have remained intentionally unchanged since its inception and continue to guide the work through: Te Tukuihotanga o te Reo, He Takiwā Rumaki and He Whakatō i te Hiahia. The Pae Motuhake strives to ensure funding is distributed evenly across our three Pou to ensure balanced support for all priorities.

    Te Tai Hau-ā-uru Investment Priorities:

    • Mārama Pū - commits to regular language planning training and development to grow our community leadership.
    • Whāinga Roa - clearly identifies long-term goals (>10 years) and has well-structured stages of development.
    • Tuku Ihotanga - engages multiple generations in shared activity that is relevant and builds enthusiasm.

    Huihui Kia Tū Pakari

Huihui Kia Tū Pakari comprised of six different full immersion kaupapa that were designed to bring together whānau whose tamariki attend the local kōhanga and kura kaupapa for wānanga and te reo classes in Ōtaki.

Rā Reo provided whānau with an opportunity to come together and learn a range of new skills. Whānau were taught by reo experts such as Piripi Walker, Tash Webby, Tipi Wehipeihana and Tai Ahu.

Tauira had the opportunity to learn grammar, language learning techniques, rākau, karakia, and mahinga kai. Kaiako from the kura were intentionally asked to participate as kaiako within the Rā Reo, as this would also increase and strengthen the connection between whānau and kaiako. It also created an opportunity for whānau from kōhanga and kura to take part, forming new relationships with one another.

A considerable part of the programme involved support for mātua with tamariki. Te Kōhanga Reo o Raukawa remained open on the Sunday to enable whānau with young children to participate.

Huihui Kia Tū Pakari is a prime example of how kōhanga and kura naturally foster Hononga Hapori Reo.

    RaRau Mai

Whānau are finding enjoyment in advancing their reo Māori skills through art at weekly RaRau Mai Māori immersion toi classes based in Te Papaioea for whānau committed to intergenerational transmission. The programme come out of demand from Te Papaioea communities need to have a space where they can immerse themselves in te reo.

It is a joyful and beautiful programme developed by Tania Te Tau, a trained Kōhanga Reo teacher, and Karangawai Marsh, an adult reo Māori kaiako and artist. RaRau Mai is for tamariki and their whānau who are committed to using te reo Māori at home and want to expand their language use by creating art together, to be with a community of first language speakers who support a community of second language speakers who also have a love for te reo.

Art is broad and you can express yourself and creativity knows no bounds, there is no right or wrong way, this is a guiding principle of RaRau Mai. If you can’t express yourself in te reo, you can also do it through art. The most important this is speaking te reo.

Classes were oversubscribed! 10 different whānau, 64 tauira in total attend with all tamariki in kōhanga reo and kura kaupapa. The relationships that are made in the toi space are lifelong relationships between tamariki, mātua as well as kaumātua.
