    Kāinga Tuku Reo

Kāinga Tuku Reo adopts the reo ūkaipō strategy, teaching the language to whānau from the comfort of their home. It encourages and restores intergenerational learning, and places reo resources in homes and communities. The programme encapsulates the understanding of a place where the Māori language is actively nurtured, shared, and experienced as an integral part of the home and community.

Approximately 20 people from five whānau were selected from Waikaremoana for a 16-week two-hour intensive reo class in their home with a kaiako.

Simple conversational structures and mixed Māori-English sentences supported learning. Instruction shifted from bilingual to mostly te reo Māori as confidence grew. Immersion in te reo Māori developed naturally, becoming central to the programme. Sessions included karakia, waiata, pepeha, and whakapapa.

For the whānau, the language immersion worked positively. We saw an increase in language skills and passion about our language, all eager to continue learning while fostering pride and self-identity within Ngāti Ruapani ki Waikaremoana.

Ngā Uri a Papakahawai rāua ko Turi Pataata Herewini

An active whānau with more than 40 members attended wānanga at Tōrere Marae. They particpated in 20 fortnightly reo classes and collaborated on five future-focused language planning hui.

Ngā Uri a Papakahawai rāua ko Turi Pataata Herewini has a generation of reo speaking adults that are passing on their knowledge. Over the course of a year, fortnightly classes and language planning hui have provided the ideal opportunity to begin the handing down of Māori cultural practices and knowledge to the next generation through te reo Māori.

Within this generation of whānau, many are beginning their reo Māori journey, the wānanga, classes and reo planning have inspired whānau and their tamariki to continue discovering and learning te reo, tikanga and te ao Māori.

Different learnings for the different generations, increasing the use of te reo in the home, speaking te reo more often with kōhanga reo and kura tamariki, kaumātua reminiscing and sharing stories, and singing from the old Ngāi Tai waiata book were such highlights.
